As I watched my beloved Yankees defeat the Phillies to win the 2009 World Series two weeks ago, several questions popped into my head regarding the science of the game.
I'm a pretty casual fan, so maybe it was because I had spent most of the week in the library studying that I had my "the way things work" cap on.
But something about watching A.J. Burnett throw filthy sliders past helpless Philadelphia batters made me curious about the science behind America's pastime.

Brown, 25, spent the entire season in AAA Columbus where he was a mid-season and post-season all-star selection and hit an International League-best .336 (140-417) with 35 2B, 1 3B, 15HR & 67 RBI in 111 games.
The .336 mark was the 2nd highest single-season average in Columbus history.

Holliday and super-agent Scott Boras will obviously milk the market for all it's worth, but in the end, the slugger will recognize he's already playing for a rock-solid organization and paired with one of the greatest hitters of all-time in Albert Pujols.
The Cardinals have the greatest possible motivation to keep Holliday in the fold not only do they need him to fuel the offense, but to keep Pujols happy as he approaches free agency after 2011.

At 12:01 a.m. today, baseball's shopping season began.
The Phillies, however, are in no rush to buy.
In a telephone interview Thursday, general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. described his approach to free agency as "aggressively patient," a contradiction in terms but also a reflection of the club's uncertainty over how the marketplace may develop this winter.
